I noticed this book on a number of best book lists for Fall 2018 reading I wasn t crazy about the plot link to the Kennedy assassination I had read Stephen King s excellent 112263 and thought that was enough for me But after scanning a couple of Nov Rd reviews I decided to give it a try I m glad I did and I will read at least one other Berney book The Long and Faraway Gone Frank Guidry works for the mob in New Orleans he s one of Carlos s guys It doesn t take many pages to get a pretty clear picture of Frank and where his loyalties lie A former mentor is now in trouble with the organization and contacts Frank for help Frank agrees to a meet though a bit reluctantly But now what does he help an old pal out at some risk to himself or does he betrayFrank is a wise guy in ways than one In uick succession Frank hears of the JFK assassination realizes he played a small though unknowing role notes some players in the chain have been uickly eliminated and uickly assesses his own futurethen runs A great set up What nextAll of a sudden we meet Charlotte mom of two fascinating little girls Rosemary and Joan whom you just can t get enough of and wife of a not so secret drunk On the spur of the moment Charlotte flees with the girls the dog an old car and not much money It takes a while for these on the run characters to hook up but when they do they make sweetmusic For the first time in his life is Frank in love or is he just using this family as a cover Remember this is 1963 no cells no digital anything but there are plants everywhere no not the potted kind Where are they headed California Charlotte would say Frank would add yeah but we ll stop in Vegas first Vegas in the 60 s a great place for the climax to this storyLots of tension well written interesting characters although a few are really over the top enough action to make a very good movie And although it s not about the assassination it made me re think a bit about my long held assumptions about JFK s murder Recommended

READ Ï November Road: A Novel Long and Faraway GoneFrank Guidrys luck has finally run outA loyal street lieutenant to New Orleans mob boss Carlos Marcello Guidry has learned that everybody is expendable But now its his turnhe knows too much about the crime of the century the assassination of President John F KennedyWithin hours of JFKs murder everyone with ties to Marcello is turning up dead and Guidry suspects hes next he was in Dallas on an errand for the boss less than two weeks before the president was shot With few good options Guidry hits the road to Las Vegas to see an old associatea dangerous man who hates Marcello enough to help Guidry vanishGuidry knows that the first rule of running is dont stop but when he sees a beautiful housewife on the side of the road with a broken down car two little daughters and a dog in the back seat he sees the perfect disguise to cover his tracks from the hit men on his tail Posing as an insurance man Guidry offers to help Charlotte reach. On the 22nd November 1963 the crime of the century that shocked the world was the assassination of President Kennedy I remember it well As a child watching the endless news footage replays on my parents TV with themAfterwards it became part of popular culture to be asked where were you when you heard of President Kennedy s assassination With my parents I watched the news footage of Lee Harvey Oswald the alleged perpetrator of murder shot to death by Jack Ruby a Dallas nightclub owner in the Dallas police headuarters Later the coverage of the funeral of the president I can remember it all vividly As I m sure most of my generation can tooEndless speculation and conspiracy theories unfolded throughout the years about another shooter on the grassy knoll has kept the assassination in the newsIn this work of fiction by Lou Berney he has used facts and key characters from that time and woven them all into a reconstruction of what may have occurred who was responsible and what events took place later to cover up the crimeThe main character is Frank Guidry a charming charismatic lieutenant of New Orleans mafia mob boss Carlos Marcello Guidry was asked to drive a car up to Dallas Later he realised that the car may have been used by the killer of President Kennedy As one by one of Marcello s employees who may also have been involved and used are killed off Guidry is fearful of his fate and goes on the run There is no escaping however the long and deadly arm of Marcello who has contacts everywhere throughout America and uses them in the hunt to catch and silence GuidryOn his journey to an escape that will hopefully save his life Guidry meets up with a woman who along with her young daughter is on a journey of her own escaping from an unhappy marriage and travelling towards a new life in Los Angeles Guidry falls in love something alien to him and he finds himself caring about the fate of mother and daughter Are they safe travelling with him or will his involvement with them put their lives also in jeopardyHunted by a ruthless mob enforcer who is closely following behind them Their journey to freedom is a tense action packed page turner of a book I literally could not put this book downMarcello the mafia boss was in real life one of the suspects of the murder of President Kennedy and his brother Robert Kennedy his attorney general who had vowed to bring mafia bosses to justice Robert Kennedy was a thorn in Marcello s side as he tried to have him deported as an illegal alien Marcello was freed from one attempt to jail and deport him on the day President Kennedy was killed He had allegedly remarked to an associate that if he cut of the head of a dog the tail would die believed to be alluding to the fact that Robert Kennedy held his important job because of his brother John KennedyI can t praise this book highly enough A truly excellent read Recommended by Don Winslow and brilliantly written by Lou Berney Edgar Award winning author of The Long and Faraway Gone
