I liked it Both characters were interesting though Olivia s story is kind of tragic

Olivia Cole does not react when she finds herself promised to Griffin Wright Jones Viscount Breckenridge as his marker for her brother s 1000 debt As Olivia adjusts to the hell and Griffin adjusts to Olivia All The Secrets are exposed and they figure a way to a HEA with pitstops in Angst Trauma and FarceThis is a very difficult book for me to rate because there were things I fucking LOVED but there was also some Real World Shit that needs to be addressed 1 Once Olivia and Griffin begin sharing their secrets with one another there s so many lovely uiet moments of comfortable domesticity that just thrilled my plebeian soul Eventually they end up sharing a bedroom and the scenes of them just living together moving around one another was so disgustingly good He moves her wardrobe into his room for her She has a side of the bed He s going to spend his life with her Their routines and how they adjust them to fit one another and include one another and UGHHH If the book were entirely moments like this I would give it 6 stars and sob into my pillow every night in gratitude 2 The Real World Shit is a lot Just so much I m going to put it all under a spoiler cut with the necessary trigger warnings shortly but I want to state upfront my extreme ignorance and uncertainty of the subject matter Because it s a lot I also want to note that this is ENTIRELY to do with Olivia s background I have not touched on Griffin s history AT ALL which is in itself A Thing as well but it is very much Traditional Romance nonsense as well as small potatoes in the context of Olivia s storytrigger warning child molestationrapeincest view spoilerOlivia s background is revealed in fits and starts within the text the shock of one revelation has already begun to fade before the next is revealed So lining them all up like this istelling I think of a larger issue The Price of Desire has Olivia reveals that prior to the age of 6 she was encouraged to sit in her father s lap and touch him while he touched her At the age of 6 she was sent to a convent school where she and other girls were taken away regularly to be raped by as she reveals later her father and other men This occurs regularly until the age of 12 when her period starts Her father later makes her attend gambling parties and perform card tricks and the like for his guests using her as a marker for gambling debts It is stated that she s being groomed to service men like these for when she s old enough to marry Finally after she flees and is working at an inn she is attacked by a drunk guest who attempts to rape her before she strangles him with her scarf and escapes It s a history of tragedy made all the so by the very real guilt and shame Olivia carries She believes she accepted what was done to her because she took gifts or because it was her father or because she went willingly She s also guilty because she believes she may have killed the man who attacked her at the inn She has night terrors and withdraws into herself when events happen to dredge up her past I don t know if that s too much for a romance novel or not I m not certain I can make that call I can say that to me it felt like the text did give Olivia s history weight but perhaps I do not think it was enough to justify her exceedingly fast peace It shows her struggling with her past but once she shares her history with Griffin it simplyfades It goes from being an open fetid wound to being a scarred over injury in the matter of pagesAnd perhaps this too is part of the allure of romance for individuals who do have such wounds that they can share and find love and heal And like the relationships and lifestyles and sex in romance novels it s all slightly glossed over slightly better than the real world would allow us to truly have Maybe that s a good thing Maybe it s not I also need to point out that the text does not stop with merely heaping atrocities upon Olivia it also has her attacked in the early chapters in a way very much like the inn yard It has her followed by her attempted rapist and eventually kidnapped by him because of his evilness seriously that s his motive And the book resolves in a horribly facsimile of a farce with Olivia s father walking away without any repercussions Olivia s attempted rapist going to visit the Continent and the other villains who orchestrated the original attack upon Olivia among other crimes exported to America And certainly this mirrors real life bad men get away with bad things But I point above to my points about Olivia s healing if this is a dream case where years of abuse are resolved with a tender conversation over toast why do we not get resolution in the form of retribution against these villains Why must we the audience bear them getting away with it while our heroine can find peace on a fantastical path hide spoiler
