I gave this book 2 stars Because I believe there was so much he could have done with it The technicalities of this book could have used improvement I worry that South African editors either suck at what they do or they purposefully allow a good work not to reach its full potential The way I feel was done with this book Just like Kopano Matlwa s Coconut Nakhane definitely has the gift of writing But a good book is than just beautiful sentences here there What I liked about the book1 Nakhane s prose is amazing His writing reads so well and really sucks you into the scene The cool air chilled his cheeks All over the village he imagined curtains being drawn lights being flicked on prayers being said glasses clinking against each other and a haze taking place There is joy he thought somewhere in those houses and unknown faces But why must one turn over every stone to find it The heat had finally loosed its chain from the land s throat ceasing the groaning he had heard it makeThe prose is what kept the book going to be honest Even when I wasn t particularly interested in what was going on at some parts the way he writes kept me reading wanting to consume of his beautiful sentence constructions2 The rape scene was so psychedelic and such a well done climax of the story I thought I liked how he went into the character s mind while it was happening and the psychotic hallucinations Davide experienced All this while Amazing Grace was playing in the background Really trippy and moving And made sense too because I m sure when something traumatic is happening the mind naturally coils into itself and creates realities alternative to the trauma that s currently happening3 That biblical references were sprinkled throughout the book Religion and the search for something meaningful resonates with all of us It also introduced an interesting Christianity vs homosexuality theme that I felt being whispered throughout the book A theme that was not an overt conflict was not condemning nor approving but was subtle and nicely done I thoughtWhat I didn t like about the book 1 The narrative was poorly done and had many loose ends that were left unresolved There were also momentsscenes that seemed unnecessary or underdeveloped He tried to include Ndimphile s back story Ndoda s story and Jeremiah s and these had poor continuity with the main story or didn t significantly inform anything in the main story Seemed almost hurried or done just to fill pagesspace 2 Character development and depth was poor The characters were amorphous and often felt like one person The differences between Davide Grey and Ndimphiwe were barely clear and they seemed not to be their own people3 The story wasn t solid I appreciate tangents in a story or parts of memory where we jump into the character s mind or even move back into the past But these weren t done so well and didn t solidifytie up the main character s journey or personality the way the do in other novels 4 The homosexuality felt a bit forced in some parts or unexplained Eg the men at the ceremony who kiss and touch each other and punch each other Or the part where Davide and Grey drove to PE to see Ndimphiwe at work and he s just walked out of a classroom with another man Okay and 5 The book was too short and felt like it was done in a hurry Like all Black Bird Books which makes me so angry because they have some REALLY talented writers They just don t develop their novels to their true potential I think Almost like Oh thank God A young black writer uick let s publish as soon as possible without putting in timesupport to develop the work South Africans won t notice the mediocrities they ll just be glad to finally be hearing from young black writers Which I understand SA DOES need black writers but we need to push through the glass ceiling that s put on black craftsmanship as well as the encouragement of mediocrity Black people CAN produce world class literatureThat this was the work of a creative talented writer was glaringly obvious It felt almost like had he spent just a little time on it or had a better editor this would have been an amazing work Definitely longer and engagingmeaningfulBut for a debut novel I congratulate Mr Nakhane Toure and look forward to his upcoming literary works He is talented and there is no uestion that somewhere inside him lies a masterpiece that good technical development will easily unearth

This book is really very very good The writing is exuisite South African publishers let writers down by working to only release books locally I believe that with a bit work this debut could ve made a mark internationally I do agree with other reviewers that aspects of the novel felt incomplete but this is still a stunning and original debut
