When I was in Saratoga Springs last month I found my way into a usedantiuarian bookstore in the basement of what used to be a bank The bank vault was part of the store and filled with books Much of the basement was taken over with books stacked everywhere books around every corner It was labyrinthine and I loved it I asked the proprietor for help finding a book When I travel I like to get a book that in some way reflects the area where I am whether written by a local author or about a local person or set in tbe areaHe took me to a copy of this book without even hesitating he knew exactly where to go This books says it s a historical novel about Katrina Trask the philanthropist wife of a wall street banker who lived in NY the later half of the 19th c and into the early 20th But I think it s a book that doesn t uite know what it is It doesn t read as a novel it reads as a memoir The author used large portions of Trasks s memoirs in this work so it s hard to say whose book this really isDespite that it was an enjoyable read about a very interesting woman who was a wife socialite writer philanthropist mother although all 4 of her children died as children pacifist activist conservationist suffragette Of course she recognized her life of privilege but she also used that privilege to make life better for those who did not enjoy the same privileges She and her husband owned a house in Saratoga and because they had no living children they resolved to make it an artist s retreat after their deathsKatrina Trask and her husband her great lovers of the arts and also commissioned a number of public works still found today in Saratoga They seemed ahead of their time working to preserve the springs and not let them be exploited for immediate gain It made me want to learn about this family
