Like many other readers I do not believe that this story is anything like as compelling or charming as the first story There are times when one feels that Jonasson is purely motivated by a desire to preach and provoke during chapters bordering on the polemic Of course he is perfectly entitled to pursue this course But I felt slightly cajoled and harried by this while all the time wondering in a book full of seeming insight why the author failed to attend to narrative details like what happened to all of the characters who ended up with Karlsson in the concluding pages of the first book For example I seem to recall that Alan K became romantically involved with the wealthy owner of the hotel where he was served the wrong drink consistently There were reformed criminals a detective and if memory serves an Elephant In a curious way given that a short period of time has elapsed between books the author s decision to omit any reference to these lovable characters felt disrespectful to those of us who entered his world and fell in love with it Just a line to explain that they had all been wiped out by typhoon would have done it and might have added some plausibility to the shift in Karlsson s character as he seems caustic and intentionally annoying in this book than he ever was in the first Given the amount of consideration given to lampooning Trump and the leaders of many other regimes with the exception of Merkel all of which is valid it would have been nice if some narrative attention had been given to the lives of those characters whom many of us have invested in and who seem to have been listlessly ignored The 7 Components of Transformative Organizing Theory rescued by a North Korean nuclear weapons mission. Jonas J has pulled off that tricky trick of admirably following up a much loved and globally successful bookand his readers and fans of the gently but intrepid Allen will be appreciative of that For sure there will folks me included who say It s not uite as good as the original but that is a reflection of the near genius of the first wander through the events of the past century rather than a criticism of this follow up Follow up should not dissuade you from taking a first dip into this where Mr J provides a touch of backstory to explain the narrative now and again Having enjoyed a a book and it s characters we The Reader want and actually feel we are owed in the same genre That s of the same pleasemuch as today for fans of Alexander McCall Smithor from my youth Arthur Ransome WE Johns Ian Fleming who as a friend of my Aunt also in the Secret Service got me my first job as a journalist or for younger readers Enid Blyton in Famous Five mode This is a fine and currently apposite work skilfully avoiding the perils of being a one hit wonder and easily for most I suspect surviving their eager anticipation Before I returned in a modest way to authoring for forty or so years I was one of those bringing a variety of successful music to Sweden with my Sonet Records companyand I suspect provided the author with much of the soundtrack to his life So I am than aware of the perils in pushing creative folks in our case musicians and song writers to stay on the same tracks and satisfy an eagerly awaiting audience Stay with us Mr JonnassonWe the Readerare already hoping for of the samelet s just hope for continued good health and mobility for Allenand us Make your own model forts castles rescued by a North Korean nuclear weapons mission. Have read the first instalment King of Sweden and Hitman Anders I am a huge fan of the writers work and his style However I could not be disappointed by this book Maybe 2 stars is a little harsh but I do think it deserves harsh judgement due to the poor handling of a story that was so carefully and intricately crafted in the originalIn the original I felt like the story the writer wanted to tell was about Alan and his life The world leaders history and Geo politics were secondary or just tools in telling that story In this instalment the writer had things he wanted to get off his chest and Alan was just a tool in allowing the writer to tell itWhile I am always a fan of mocking Trump Un Putin I do not think it should be at the expense of such a diligently created character Actually the first half of the book was not unpleasant but it felt like the writer really did not have an end game in mind It meandered pointlessly though much of the middle sectionMy last gripe was the Ipad type device While funny to begin with it was over used and reduced Alan s dialogue to talking twitter feedSo very disappointed The Numbers Game Baseball's Lifelong Fascination with Statistics rescued by a North Korean nuclear weapons mission.
